Reconstructive Surgery

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers.  An estimated 700,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year. There are many types of skin cancer, but the most common on the face are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma.  Basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer of the eyelid.  It is usually biopsied in the office to confirm the diagnosis.  Surgical removal of the cancer is done as an outpatient.  When necessary, the eyelid is reconstructed using a skin graft with excellent results and minimal scarring.

Approximately 500,000 serious eye injuries occur each year; 25,000 lead to total blindness – especially in young adults.

The eyelids, tissue around the eyes, and the bones of the orbit may be damaged by many types of trauma including car accidents, fight, and sports injuries.

Quick attention to the injury as well as possible need for plastic and reconstructive surgery are important to restore the proper function as well as cosmetic appearance.
